When people hear I am a franchise consultant, they often ask me how I got into this business. The truth is my road was a long one, and it began when I was a kid. I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My dad and grandfather both owned Ford dealerships, and I grew up helping out around the business. I learned early on that business ownership demands a lot of dedication and hard work. But I also saw first-hand how rewarding the experience could be.
Nonetheless, once I finished college I decided to take the traditional route and accepted a corporate job with Ford. I worked my way up to the executive level, and I enjoyed a great deal of success in my career. Eventually the sacrifice of all the long hours, travel and relocation became too much, and I was ready to carve out more time to enjoy my family and my life.
Along the way I realized that my perceived comfort zone—an executive position with benefits and a regular paycheck—was not so comfortable after all. Big companies like Ford were letting people go in large numbers, finding ways to do more with fewer human resources. I decided to take control of my own destiny and build something of my own.
I invested in a master franchise opportunity, and I learned a lot about the industry. But what I learned about myself was that my true passion was in helping others realize theirs. Once I was introduced to the FranChoice concept I knew I had found my place. Today I live life on my own terms while enjoying an incredibly rewarding career.
